Chef-restaurateur Geoffrey Zakarian and architect Thierry Despont reimagine the Palm Court at New York’s legendary Plaza hotel


When chef-restaurateur Geoffrey Zakarian took over as culinary director of the New York Plaza Hotel in 2013, it was clear that great things were in the pipeline for the legendary New York property. Earlier this fall, Zakarian reintroduced afternoon tea, revised with a new menu, custom-made Bernardaud tableware, and tea by Palais des Thes. A few fixtures remain, though, such as the beloved child-friendly “Eloise” menu. Later in the fall came the bigger change: a bar with a varied cocktail menu and small bites. Now the grand space can be enjoyed all day, whether for breakfast, a light lunch, or a late-night nosh.

The previous incarnation of the space wasn’t going to work, however (there wasn’t even a bar in the room). Enter Thierry Despont, a renowned French architect, designer, and artist based in Manhattan.
